Abbreviations of currencies
according to norm ISO 4217
International standard ISO 4217 was created by
the ISO with the aim of defining codes of three letters for all the
currencies of the world.
This eliminates the confusions caused by some currency
names like dollar, franc or frees, that are used in numerous countries but
they have very different types of change.
The two first letters of the code are the two letters
of the code of the country of the currency according to standard ISO 3166-1
and third it is normally the initial of the currency in him.
Also a code of three digits exists assigned to each
currency, in the same way that exists a code of three digits assigned to
each country like part of standard ISO 3166.
This norm also defines the relations between main the
monetary unit and its subdivisions.
Standard ISO 4217 also includes codes for precious
metals (gold, silver, palladium and platinum) and other definitions used in
the financial world. Also special codes for tests exist (XTS), and to
indicate no monetary transactions (XXX). All these codes begin with
letter “X”. The precious metals use “X” and the chemical symbol of the metal
(for example the silver is XAG). ISO 3166 never assigns codes of
country beginning with “X”, reason why ISO 4217 can use codes that begin
with that letter without risking to collisions.
